El asesor económico del presidente Donald Trump, Kevin Hassett, afirmó este lunes que la Casa Blanca no prevé de momento anunciar una subida de aranceles a Colombia, un día después de que el mandatario dijera que planeaba tomar represalias comerciales contra Bogotá en medio de una crisis diplomática.
“Ya veremos. Por ahora, no hay ningún anuncio previsto“, respondió brevemente Hasset a preguntas de la prensa a la entrada de la residencia ejecutiva estadounidense.
El director del Consejo Económico Nacional no ofreció detalles sobre cuánto podrían aumentar los gravámenes a Colombia, que desde abril enfrenta una base arancelaria del 10 %, similar a la impuesta por EE.UU. a la mayoría de naciones latinoamericanas, como parte de la guerra comercial emprendida por Trump.
Ambos países atraviesan una nueva crisis diplomática después de que el presidente republicano anunciara este domingo el fin de la ayuda financiera al país suramericano por su supuesta inacción en la lucha contra el narcotráfico, y acusara a su homólogo colombiano, Gustavo Petro, de ser “un líder del narcotráfico”.
Petro, quien ha redoblado sus críticas contra Trump desde que este ordenara un despliegue militar en el Caribe y ataques contra embarcaciones bajo el pretexto de combatir el narcotráfico, ha negado las acusaciones y calificado al estadounidense de “grosero e ignorante con Colombia”.
Horas después, Trump confirmó que planeaba imponer nuevos gravámenes, después de que el senador republicano Lindsey Graham anunciara que la Casa Blanca preparaba sanciones comerciales.
Trump ya amenazó en enero pasado con imponer aranceles del 25 % a Colombia por la negativa de Petro de recibir dos vuelos de migrantes deportados, pero el mandatario colombiano acabó cediendo.
